    Distribution and Numbers of the Kaminuriak Caribou Herd in March and April, 1977

    The distribution and abundance of the Kaminuriak caribou herd were documented through an aerial survey conducted in March and April 1977. It appears that the herd altered its traditional migration patterns and abandoned its southern wintering grounds in this year at least. The size of the herd was estimated at 30,770 animals - a significant decrease from the 63,000 animals found in 1968. Available data, although limited, suggests that the maximum allowable harvest of 5% of the herd has been exceeded in recent years. Although the possibility exists that some Kaminuriak caribou may have dispersed northward, it is considered most likely that the decline in the size of the herd is the result of overharvesting

    Aerodynamic shape optimization of a low drag fairing for small livestock trailers

    Small livestock trailers are commonly used to transport animals from farms to market within the United Kingdom. Due to the bluff nature of these vehicles there is great potential for reducing drag with a simple add-on fairing. This paper explores the feasibility of combining high-fidelity aerodynamic analysis, accurate metamodeling, and efficient optimization techniques to find an optimum fairing geometry which reduces drag, without significantly impairing internal ventilation. Airflow simulations were carried out using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to assess the performance of each fairing based on three design variables. A Moving Least Squares (MLS) metamodel was built on a fifty-point Optimal Latin Hypercube (OLH) Design of Experiments (DoE), where each point represented a different geometry configuration. Traditional optimization techniques were employed on the metamodel until an optimum geometrical configuration was found. This optimum design was tested using CFD and it matched closely to the metamodel prediction. Further, the drag reduction was measured at 14.4% on the trailer and 6.6% for the combined truck and trailer

    Factors influencing the development and carbohydrate metabolism of Echinococcus granulosus in dogs

    Echinococcus granulosus adult worms, 35 days postinfection, were measured for dispersion in the intestines of 10 dogs, a range of morphological characters, and the excreted end products of carbohydrate catabolism following 4 hr incubation in vitro. Most worms were found in the proximal sections of the small intestine, but the pattern of dispersion differed between dogs. Worm development varied both between dogs and between different regions of the small intestine of individual dogs. Overall there was a high level of variability with no simple patterns. Worm metabolism was related to worm development and, also independently, to local population density within the intestine. Larger, more mature worms produced less lactate and, at higher densities. worms tended to produce more acetate and succinate (pathways with a higher energy yield than lactate) and less ethanol. Thus, both more developed worms and high population density are associated with a shift from cytosolic to mitochondrial metabolism. The variation between worm populations along the small intestine along with the observed variation between worm populations from sibling dogs infected with genetically identical parasites suggests that the local host environment has a significant effect on parasite development

    Ventilation of small livestock trailers

    A large number of livestock is transported to market in small box trailers. The welfare of animals transported in this way is now assuming greater importance with the onset of tougher EU legislation. This paper presents the first study into the ventilation of small livestock trailers using experimental and computational methods. Wind tunnel studies, using a 1/7th scale model, highlight the important influence of the towing vehicle and trailer design on the airflow within the trailer. Detailed CFD analysis agrees well with the wind tunnel data and offers the ability to assess the impact of design changes

    Substance P regulates puberty onset and fertility in the female mouse

    Puberty is a tightly regulated process that leads to reproductive capacity. Kiss1 neurons are crucial in this process by stimulating GnRH, yet how Kiss1 neurons are regulated remains unknown. Substance P (SP), an important neuropeptide in pain perception, induces gonadotropin release in adult mice in a kisspeptin-dependent manner. Here, we assessed whether SP, through binding to its receptor NK1R (neurokinin 1 receptor), participates in the timing of puberty onset and fertility in the mouse. We observed that 1) selective NK1R agonists induce gonadotropin release in prepubertal females; 2) the expression of Tac1 (encoding SP) and Tacr1 (NK1R) in the arcuate nucleus is maximal before puberty, suggesting increased SP tone; 3) repeated exposure to NK1R agonists prepubertally advances puberty onset; and 4) female Tac1-/- mice display delayed puberty; moreover, 5) SP deficiency leads to subfertility in females, showing fewer corpora lutea and antral follicles and leading to decreased litter size. Thus, our findings support a role for SP in the stimulation of gonadotropins before puberty, acting via Kiss1 neurons to stimulate GnRH release, and its involvement in the attainment of full reproductive capabilities in female mice.     Solvent-switchable continuous-breathing behaviour in a diamondoid metal–organic framework and its influence on CO2 versus CH4 selectivity

    Understanding the behaviour of flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)—porous crystalline materials that undergo a structural change upon exposure to an external stimulus—underpins their design as responsive materials for specific applications, such as gas separation, molecular sensing, catalysis and drug delivery. Reversible transformations of a MOF between open- and closed-pore forms—a behaviour known as ‘breathing’—typically occur through well-defined crystallographic transitions. By contrast, continuous breathing is rare, and detailed characterization has remained very limited. Here we report a continuous-breathing mechanism that was studied by single-crystal diffraction in a MOF with a diamondoid network, (Me2NH2)[In(ABDC)2] (ABDC, 2-aminobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate). Desolvation of the MOF in two different solvents leads to two polymorphic activated forms with very different pore openings, markedly different gas-adsorption capacities and different CO2 versus CH4 selectivities. Partial desolvation introduces a gating pressure associated with CO2 adsorption, which shows that the framework can also undergo a combination of stepped and continuous breathing

    Effects of quenching on phase transformations and ferroelectric properties of 0.35BCZT-0.65KBT ceramics

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd Solid solutions of 0.35(Ba,Ca)(Zr,Ti)O3-0.65(K0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 (BCZT-KBT) having various Ca and Zr contents were synthesized by solid state reaction. The sintered ceramics exhibited interesting features comprising core-shell type microstructures and relaxor ferroelectric behaviour. The influence of air-quenching on structure and electrical properties has been systematically investigated. The results indicate that the compositional heterogeneity in the shell regions, for the slow-cooled state, was reduced by air quenching. Improvements are evident in ferroelectric tetragonal phase content, accompanied by increased polarisation values and depolarisation temperatures. Comparing the results obtained for two BCZT compositions, it was demonstrated that the stability of the ferroelectric tetragonal phase in slow-cooled BCZT-KBT samples was improved for the ceramic with lower Ca and Zr concentrations, denoted x = 0.06, comparing with that for higher levels, denoted x = 0.15. Furthermore, the electric field-induced ferroelectric state in the quenched ceramic with x = 0.06 was found to be more stable during heating, yielding an enhanced depolarisation temperature
